How to clean hand tools using WD-40

If you’re a tradie, handyman, or just somebody who uses tools a lot, you’ll know how important it is to keep those tools in top condition. Grease and rust build-up on tools is quite common, and can blunt sharp edges of blades, as well as make metal parts stick together.

To save yourself some time and effort, you need a tool cleaner that will tackle both grease and rust at the same time. The good news is that you probably already have this product sitting around in your workshop. That’s right, WD-40 is actually a great all-purpose tool cleaner.

If your tools are very greasy, you may want to apply some WD-40 Specialist Degreaser first. Just apply a coat on the tool and wait for five minutes for the lubricant to loosen the grease, then wipe the grease off with a lint-free cloth or some steel wool to scrub for stubborn stains and dry.

If your tools do not have excessive grease and you just want to remove some excess surface rust you can go ahead and spray the tool with some Multi-Purpose Product. This will penetrate the surface rust and gently separate it from the metal. You can then supply the elbow grease with some abrasive cleaning. After it’s been applied, it will continue to protect your tools from further corrosion.
